property of being bio-based. Bio-based refers to the attribute of the raw material, while biodegradable refers to the structural attribute; the two are not related.
Biodegradable fabrics can be decomposed by microorganisms (such as bacteria and fungi) into water, carbon dioxide/methane and biomass (compost) through a natural process under specific environmental conditions (such as high temperature and humidity in industrial composting, soil, and seawater).
Solving the problem of waste gas pollution: This is the core advantage of biodegradability. Ideally, unlike traditional waste chemical fibers (such as polypropylene), they will not remain in landfills or the natural environment for hundreds of years. Instead, they return to nature, participate in the ecological cycle, and reduce microplastic pollution.
The degradation conditions for biodegradable fabrics are harsh. Most biodegradable fabrics can be completely degraded within a few months only under specific industrial composting conditions (about 58°C, specific humidity, and bacterial colonies). If they are discarded at will, their degradation rate will be very slow, and they will also cause pollution. It should be emphasized that "biodegradable" by no means equals "can be discarded at will".
